Some experts attributed this slowdown to summer doldrums but now the September 2009 figures are in and the trend appears to be continuing. LinkedIn had a about a six percent growth in traffic while FaceBook experienced a meager two percent growth and Twitter’s growth in unique visitors actually declined by about a quarter of a percent. And once mighty MySpace declined by about twelve percent. The summer argument is out the window as September usually means a return to school and business and a general increase in Internet activity. So what’s going on? An Internet wide slowdown would have affected LinkedIn. Let’s play around with what might be happening to these three sites.

Facebook

It’s possible that Facebook is approaching market saturation as it is already huge with over two and a quarter billion users. Twitter stands at a little over a hundred million and LinkedIn has about fifty million users. Facebook appears to be aggressively “twitterizing” itself in an attempt to keep its own users and perhaps cut into Twitter’s market share. Time will tell whether Facebook continues to level off or not.

LinkedIn

In a press release after Compete.com’s numbers were released LinkedIn says it is continuing to grow at the rate of about one new member every second! LinkedIn’s total users of fifty million are about half international. Obviously their mission of “connecting the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful” is working. If you roam around the blogoshpere a bit you wonder if some of that success cannot be attributed to the dedicated focus of LinkedIn. Some see the personal aspects of Facebook as clutter and noise and prefer the professional, no nonsense flavor of LinkedIn. It appears that many LinkedIn users who want that personal and private life interaction also have Facebook accounts. There has been talk of “information overload” on the net in general and “social fatigue” on the strictly social sites. LinkedIn avoids those issues by being “strictly business.”

Twitter

Twitter is the most interesting of the three. Again search the blogoshpere and you’ll find many Tweeters are waiting for new features, and they’re not getting them. Twitter appears to be content ceding that field to third party developers. Many of such third party apps have also experienced explosive growth. What’s more the Twitter interface is so “feature poor” that third party providers like Tweetie and Tweetdeck have jumped in and many Tweeters login there instead of on Twitter. Currently Facebook and LinkedIn are the world’s two major social networking sites. It is estimated that, Facebook market value is about 450 billion U.S. dollars, the online advertising revenue is up to 60% of the total revenue; LinkedIn market value is about 32 billion,and online advertising business takes 28% of total revenue.

This post will help you begin to distinguish between the value of LinkedIn for business and the value of Facebook for business. In a previous article, I looked at Facebook vs. Twitter.

It helps to understand the evolution of these two platforms to get an idea of what works best for each.  Facebook began as a social networking tool for college students.  Launched in 2004 in response to MySpace which linked young people together throughout their high school years, Facebook targeted the student entering a college campus.  In the early days it was a highly social network, similar to MySpace.

LinkedIn began, not as a social network, but as a business network.  In contrast to Facebook, LinkedIn disallowed opportunities to post photo albums or to converse freely with the contacts.  In the early days, the founders of LinkedIn saw an opportunity to create a social media site that was a little less “social” and a little more “professional.”

Even though LinkedIn has expanded with applications to allow for many of the things we can do on Facebook and Twitter, it maintains its identity as a professional networking community.  The restrictions for connection with people on LinkedIn are tighter than either Facebook or Twitter.  Those restrictions have been loosened in recent years, but you still must say how you know a person before you can connect.

In the early days LinkedIn began as a job search resource whereas Facebook began as a social site for college students.  Headhunters as well as human resource professionals used LinkedIn to identify potential candidates. LinkedIn still serves this purpose, but it has grown to be a lot more than a hotbed for people looking for jobs. A strong professional network of trusted connections gives you a career advantage.  Furthermore, the ability to quickly gain access to information and resources in this global economy will give you a significant competitive edge. If you see LinkedIn as merely a place for job hunting, you’ve missed a lot!

Knowing how the two platforms began helps you understand the strengths of each and how you might best capitalize on those strengths.

There are many more value differences between LinkedIn, Facebook and the other social networks.  Ultimately, you must look at each platform and decide how you can create a social media strategy for your business.

Perhaps it would be misleading to say that as a job searcher you MUST be on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or other social and business networking sites. But, assuming that you use social media in appropriate and professional ways, being connected and networking in these ways can only help. And, few people would argue that you shouldn’t seize on any edge that you can give yourself in a job market that is widely being called the most competitive in a quarter-century.

Twitter, for those unfamiliar, is a service that allows you to communicate and stay connected with your colleagues, current and former co-workers, friends, family, and other contacts through the exchange of quick, simple answers (140 characters or less) to the question, “What are you doing now?” While the premise is simple-so simple that you might at first question how “Tweeting” (Twitter-speak for posting an update to Twitter) could be helpful in your job search-I would urge you to take another look. Twitter has become vastly popular and you might be surprised at how many of your colleagues, friends, and even top experts in your field or profession are on Twitter.

If you are actively involved with managing your career or conducting a job search, here are just a few benefits that will justify the time you spend setting up your free Twitter account and learning how to use it:

1) Twitter can be a great tool to help you build, enhance, and promote your personal brand. Briefly, your personal brand (as it relates to your career) is what differentiates you and makes you and your contributions uniquely valuable in the workplace. As a job searcher, you can use Twitter to make your followers aware of your expertise, post links to interesting news stories about your industry, or post tips related to your profession. All of these are brand-building activities that will make you memorable to your contacts, boost your credibility, and help set you apart as a leader in your field.

2) Twitter is an extraordinary networking tool. Remember that networking is all about building relationships. Twitter helps you stay in contact with people in your network in a quick and easy way that was never before possible. It will allow you to keep your contacts up-to-date on your job search, it is a great way to learn about unadvertised job openings, and it is often an easy way to get referrals to people you should talk to. Of course, it is important to remember that networking is also about providing reciprocal help, and Twitter allows you a fast, easy way to let people in your network know about job openings you’ve heard about, or give other help or advice to your contacts when they need it.

3) Twitter provides you with a way to connect almost instantly with recruiters and other hiring authorities in your field. More and more recruiters are using Twitter and other social media tools to find candidates for job postings. Some companies are actively encouraging their employees to Tweet about (or discuss on LinkedIn or Facebook) job openings that they are trying to fill. If you are regularly Tweeting about your job search and posting other on-brand Twitter posts, it is just a matter of time before you start uncovering and being referred for attractive job or business opportunities.

Are you convinced? Even for the time-challenged professional (does that describe nearly all of us?), Twitter is easy to use. You don’t even need to be sitting at your computer as Twitter is mobile and can easily be used on your iPhone, Blackberry, or cell phone.

When you are ready to get started, here are some quick tips:

1. Sign up for your free Twitter account and fill out your profile. Remember that you will be using your account for networking and professional purposes, so use discretion and only include information or a photo that you would be comfortable sharing with recruiters, your colleagues, and the world. If you have a reason to keep your business and personal life separate, you should create separate accounts.

2. Search for and “follow” people that you know. Twitter provides easy tools and instructions for doing this. Consider friends, family, current and former co-workers, industry contacts, people you went to college with, etc. Once you are following these people, look through their contacts and selectively follow some of their contacts. Even if you don’t know someone, if you have a reason to do so, follow them. This is a way to build new relationships.

3. As you begin to build your list of people you are following, many will begin to follow you. When you are getting started, try to post Tweets daily-perhaps twice daily. Besides just answering the basic question “What are you doing now?” (always keeping in mind that your Tweets should be appropriate and follow basic rules of etiquette) try to regularly post useful, on-brand information and links.

4. When your contacts Tweet, respond if you can answer a question or have useful information or tips for them. Twitter gives you two ways to do this: direct messages and replies. Be selective about which method you use. A direct message will only be seen by the person you are responding to. A reply will go to everyone that follows you.

5. Search Twitter for keywords. This is a good way to find out what is going on and being discussed on topics of interest to you among people that you aren’t already following. You may also find interesting people that you will want to follow. The place to do that is search.twitter.com

5. Do you have a Facebook account, a LinkedIn profile, a blog, or another website? There are options to link them all and post status updates simultaneously to all of them. This can be a great timesaver, so it is worth taking the time to learn how to link them. You could also consider including your Twitter user name in your email signature files or on business cards. Doing so will quickly build your following, and the larger your following, the more beneficial Twitter will be to your job search and career.

While Facebook and Twitter battle for the top spot in the social media world one thing is clear – Facebook far surpasses all other social networking sites, including MySpace and LinkedIn. Twitter is undeniably hot but the 140-character limitation is, well, limiting. MySpace has clearly focused on making itself uber-hot for teens. LinkedIn is a great business tool but still keeps a corporate-like environment hovering over its virtual conference room, and without the water cooler conversation happening on Facebook, it just doesn’t measure up to the FB traffic, yet.

Facebook works because it crosses boundaries. When used correctly, business owners, managers and supervisors can tap into both business and personal connections. And for those who use FB on a personal level, the connections and “friends” can lead to fantastic business opportunities – if you create and use the Facebook page to the maximize the site’s potential.

And that’s the key. Many VARs are simply jumping in to social networking by simply creating a user name and password, writing up a bit of a bio and branding message and then, well, that’s it. They aren’t posting thought-provoking ideas or posing questions for discussion, or sharing links to great ideas from other sites. They are not utilizing Facebook to its full potential.

So how many friends do you have on Facebook anyway? While it’s not an end-all, be-all to whether or not your Facebook page is helping to position you and your brand, the more friends you have, the better the chances are that you’re reaching out to your customers – and their customers.

Here are just a few of the ways you can use your Facebook page as a mini-branding website in itself:
- Highlight company news.
- Invite customers and vendors to participate in events.
- Post links to articles, ebooks and online webinars that you offer.
- Connect and communicate with your customers.
- Continue to position your brand.

- Offer an honest inside glimpse of who you are and what your core values stand for.
Whether it’s for friends or fans, your page must communicate and continue to develop and tell your story and your brand. As you embark on creating your page for the first time, try these few easy steps:

- Determine who you want viewing your page and set your account settings accordingly. Do you want everyone on Facebook to be able to view your information or just your customers? Maybe it’s your customers and their customers (in Facebook this would be your “Friends” and their “Friends”). Once you decide whom you want to communicate with, ensure that your messaging and posts fulfill the needs of that target audience. Your customers may not want to know that your cat sleeps on your desk while you work – or maybe they do. The key is to provide a balance with informative information about your product and brand, while making it a bit human and personalized.

- Categorize your tabs on your profile page to match that of your audience. Will your target audience want more info than what is provided in the information section of the Facebook page? What kind of photos or video can you add? Facebook can conduct polls and surveys for you as well to drive conversation and position you as a thought-leader in the industry. Think like your customers would think. What would they want to learn from you? Then provide that for them.

- Have a party. Or in Facebook’s world, an “Event”. An event doesn’t necessarily have to be a physical happening in a brick and mortar location either. It could be a webinar invitation or a blog posting that you’ve created where you want to encourage people to interact with you on a particular topic. Facebook allows you to invite people to events. It’s a great way to make your customers feel a part of your community and your world. And you help to position your brand at the same time.

- Continue to offer the goods. Customers, vendors – your friends – will continue to come back to your FB page and interact with you if you provide them with a steady flow of resources, information, and insight that will help them do their jobs better in order to be more profitable. Are there new trends on the horizon that you’re aware of? Have you partnered with two vendors in order to offer a complete end-to-end solution for your customers? What are the tools you have in your treasure chest that will help to motivate those you engage with? Add those to your page as well.

Just because you have a Facebook page doesn’t mean that it’s working to your benefit. To make your Facebook page dance you must show a bit of vulnerability, a lot of energy, and offer up plenty of reasons for friends and fans to stay connected. Most importantly, create a Facebook plan that will keep you on track and on target with your goals – and help you to build more and more friendships.

You may have already dipped your toes into the social networking pool with LinkedIn and Twitter, but have you considered Facebook? No? Maybe it’s time to add a Facebook Page to your marketing tool kit.

Facebook’s core service is completely free and supported by advertising revenue. To set up an account, you need to sign up with a unique user name and password. This creates a public Facebook Profile that you populate with whatever personal information you wish to share. If you’re concerned about privacy, lock your content, making it available only to those people you confirm as friends.

Once you have a Facebook account, you are able to set up a page for your business. Whereas Facebook Profiles function primarily as a conduit through which users share personal information, Facebook Pages, which launched in November 2007, offer a way for businesses, sports teams, films, brands, and public figures to establish a Facebook presence. Users opt-in to Facebook Pages by adding themselves as your fans. Fans can send messages, respond to posted content, and participate in discussions. In turn, businesses can use their Facebook Page to send updates to fans and engage them with videos, notes, links, and other content that communicates their business message.

Although Pages look and behave much like a user’s personal Facebook Profile, certain differences exist:

Anyone, even people who don’t have a Facebook account, can view a Facebook Page. In contrast, users must have and be logged into a Facebook account to view a Facebook Profile. Because Facebook Pages are viewable by the public, Internet search engines are able to index your Page and share it with their users.
Users don’t need confirmation to become your fan. Anyone can become a fan of a Facebook Page.
Facebook Pages can have an unlimited number of fans; the number of friends is limited for Facebook Profiles.
With Facebook Pages you can send targeted updates to all your fans at once; this feature is not available with Facebook Profiles.

To set up a Facebook Page, you first need a Facebook Profile. Once you establish a personal profile, go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php. Type the name of the Page exactly as you want it to appear. The page name should be one that users will use to search for it because you will not be able to change the name later. Next, choose the category that is most appropriate for your business. Now you can create content and publish your Page.

Facebook Pages come with multiple applications. Browse the application directory to view the options. One application that may be of interest to medical communicators is the Notes application, Facebook’s blogging feature. If you’ve considered blogging, but don’t want to set up your own site, try the Notes application. To write a note, go to the Edit Page for your Facebook Page, click on “Notes,” and click on “Write a New Note.”

Of course, with any social media tool there is the question of whether it’s worthwhile. The answer depends on what you expect from using social media. From a business perspective, Facebook can drive traffic to your website, increase brand awareness, and enable you to connect to and engage customers and people who are interested in your service.

Keep in mind that it’s important to keep your online personal and professional lives separate. In the Facebook world, this means reserving your Profile for your personal connections and using your Page to connect with customers and business associates. You probably don’t want your clients to become your Facebook friends where they can view everything your friends write, mundane or otherwise.

If you’re in the middle of a job search, you’ve probably posted your resume on Monster, Career Builder, and your alumni job boards. Maybe you’ve even started finding old colleagues on Facebook and LinkedIn. But are you making the most of all the social media options that are available to you? Do you know how to use Twitter to boost your job search?

If you’re never thought about using Twitter to help you find your next job, now’s the time. Twitter can give you direct access to professionals in your field, as well as resources designed specifically for job seekers, both of which can pave the way to your dream job. Here’s how to get started.

Identify Your Niche
The number of users on Twitter is huge and can be a bit overwhelming. The easiest way to get a grasp on Twitter is to think about it as a television with lots and lots and lots of channels. What you need to do is dial in the channel that contains the news and information you want to hear.

In other words, start by identifying the career or industry you want to enter and then finding that channel, or niche, on Twitter. If you want to become a wedding planner, for example, you need to find where all the other wedding planners are meeting up in cyberspace and chatting. If you’re a chef, you need to find where the other chefs are tweeting about new recipes, daily menus, and how to fix a leaky pipe in the middle of dinner rush.

By identifying your niche, it makes it easier to manage the number of tweets you’re reading and users you’re communicating. It also ensures that your tweets are reaching other people who care about what you have to say, and vice versa. Lastly, it makes sure you’re receiving information that will keep you up-to-date on your industry.

Research Blogs
A great way to find your niche and build your Twitter account is to identify the thought leaders in your industry and read their blogs or websites. Most writers and bloggers will include a link to their Twitter account, called a Twitter handle, on their blog or homepage. Just look for the blue Twitter icon, or check their contact information, for their Twitter handle. If that doesn’t work, you can search for them by name directly on Twitter.

To get started, compose a list of 10 thought and industry leaders in your field. Find their blogs and websites, and follow them on Twitter. Check out their blogroll—a list of blogs and writers featured on most blogs—and follow those writers on Twitter as well. You’ll have a healthy list of people to follow and connect with in no time.

Find the Right Hashtags
Another great way to meet and connect with like-minded Twitter users (or Tweeples, as they are often called), is to use hashtags. Hashtags are the Twitter signposts that will get you where you need to go. They are like search terms, but better. If you’ve never seen one before, they look like this: #Michiganfootball.

By typing #Michiganfootball into the search screen, you will automatically pull up all tweets that use this hashtag. You’ll see tweets like “It’s Saturday! Go Blue #Michiganfootball” and “Denard Robinson for Heisman #Michiganfootball.” This will give you a whole list of people interested in your topic, who you can follow and reply to.

You can also use hashtags to enter yourself into conversation about a certain topic. Most people use hashtags at the end of a tweet, but some use them at the end or the beginning. Where you put it doesn’t matter as much as using the right one. By running searches on different terms, you can find the hashtags used most often by your industry (and therefore ensure your tweets are getting read).

Just as there’s specific Twitter conversations revolving around graphic design principles, culinary secrets, and college football, there are also many resources on Twitter devoted to helping job seekers. If you can identify the users and groups in this niche, you have a whole new way of sharing your resume, contacting recruiters, getting great job advice, and meeting potential employers.

By using job-related hashtags, such as #jobseekers, #jobhunt or #careeradvice, you’ll be able to follow and enter conversations about job searches. This will expose you to users like @jobangels and @Hire_Friday, both of whom aim to connect job seekers to potential jobs, colleagues and employers. The more you can find and follow users like these, the more job leads and advice you’ll get.

Get Engaged
Ok, by now you’re following a bunch of people, reading their tweets, and hopefully even sending out a few tweets of your own. It’s a great start, but you need to do more if you want to make yourself stand out amongst the millions of other tweeples out there. In other words, you need to get engaged.

So what does that mean? It means starting conversations, commenting, and retweeting other people’s posts. If you’ve got a question about your job search, post it to Twitter with the appropriate hash tags. If you see someone else asking a question and you know the answer, reply to them. If you see a great piece of advice come across your Twitter feed, retweet it to your followers.

The more you engage, the more people you’ll meet and follow, and the better you chances will be of finding job leads and potential employers

Join Twitter Chats
Watch for chats in your niche or industry, and when they come up, join them. Chats are typically held weekly and are run by a moderator, who will set the time, send out announcements, begin the chat, and ask questions throughout. They usually take an hour, and are designated with a hashtag so users can follow them.

A great chat for jobseekers, for example, is the Hire Friday chat. Hire Friday is designated by the #HFchat hashtag, and is a forum where job seekers and career professionals alike can discuss employment topics, share job search advice, and ask questions. It’s held every Friday from noon to 1:00 p.m. (EST). You can follow the Hire Friday chat by searching the hashtag #HFchat  every Friday at noon. (And don’t forget to follow its founder and moderator, @HRMargo, for updates and information!)

If you watch a Twitter chat for awhile, you’ll see that most of the regular users know each other, promote each others content, and give each other valuable insights. This is why Twitter chats are so valuable: they give you a great opportunity to connect with others in your field.

Monitor Your Progress
While it’s great to add followers to your account, the true measure of Twitter success is how much conversation you’re engaged in, how many people are taking about you (or your product or company), and how often your tweets are being retweeted.

To monitor your profess, enter your twitter handle (@yourname) in the search box. All tweets related to you will appear—you may see people responding to your questions, asking you direct questions, or thanking you for retweeting their information. You can also click on “retweets” to see who is reposting your tweets and how often. (Don’t forget to thank them!)

As your account grows, you can also watch your progress on Klout, which uses a variety of data to give you a Twitter score, such as the reach of your audience, the likelihood that your tweets will be acted upon, on how many influential tweeples are following you. By following your score on Klout, you’ll be able to see exactly where you are, and learn what you need to do to take it to the next level.

Move Your Conversations Offline
Once you’ve established relationships through Twitter, it’s important to go beyond the 140 twitter message. You can contact other users through the direct message option (which is like email, but only 140 characters) to exchange email addresses, ask specific questions, or make a time to meet in person.
